Difference Between Maryland Prison and Federal Prison

What is the Difference Between Federal Prison and Maryland State Prison?

Maryland prisons and Federal prisons both house inmates or those facing trial. There following are some differences between both prisons:

  • Federal prisons confine individuals accused or convicted of federal crimes. Federal crime often involves state borders, multiple state offenses, institution-based crime, and white-collar crimes. State prisons detain persons charged with or facing trial for state crimes. State crimes here mean offenses confined to Maryland under the state court system's jurisdiction. Many property and violent crimes are in this category.
  • Another critical area of difference is in the management of the prison systems. The Maryland Department of Corrections has oversight of state prisons, while the Federal Bureau of Prisons is in charge of federal prisons.
  • Federal prisons have a network of facilities that makes it possible to post a convict to serve time in any part of the country. It is different for Maryland state prisons because they make the offender do the entire incarceration time within the state's facilities.
  • The length of sentences is longer in federal prisons than in state prisons of Maryland. This reflects the subtle differences between the justice processes of the two systems.

How to Lookup an Inmate in Maryland

Parties may either lookup an inmate using the Bureau of Prisons website tool. Requestors will be required to search using the inmate's name or number to narrow the available options. However, requests for Maryland inmate records may be directed to the jail facility where the inmate is being held.

Maryland County Jails

Maryland State County Jails are local departments of corrections under the management of County law enforcement agencies. Each County has a sheriff's department that books and detains persons charged with misdemeanors and local ordinance violations. Interested parties can look up, send commissaries or money to an inmate in County jails across the state by visiting the county government website. Another way to do this is to contact the law enforcement agency in charge of the area of interest. Local corrections departments can also house state offenders awaiting trial or in transit. The defining feature of County jails in Maryland is short-term stay, usually not exceeding a year. Thirty jails serve the 23 counties in Maryland. According to the National Institute of Corrections data analysis, the jail population in Maryland has been unavailable in the last five years.

How Does the Federal Prison System Work?

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is a federal agency that handles persons serving sentences imposed by the federal court system. With the headquarters in Washington DC, it is a network of 122 prison facilities that run through the country's states, including Maryland. Although there is a more systematic stratification, the facilities' security levels are low, medium, and high security. Low-security prisons are reserved for the least violent offenders, while high security is reserved for prisoners' violent spectrum. All prisoners have increased registration numbers that may reflect the involvement of investigation agencies (Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Corrections, or Immigration Services) or bear the Bureau of Prisons allocated I.D.
